Brooklyn Cyclist
Brooklyn’s most bike-friendly crossing guard

Every morning as I pedal up Clinton Street on my way to work, I pass by my favorite crossing guard at the intersection at Warren Street. She’s the most bike-friendly crossing guard I’ve ever encountered in Brooklyn.

Maybe you’ve seen her yourself. She’s the one who, every morning as commuters pedal by her on their way to the East River bridges, she says, without fail, “Good morning bikers!”

Last week, when the street was particularly crammed with cars, she told us (just loudly enough so that the cab drivers with open windows could hear her), “watch out for all these maniacs.”

And today, just as a car, predictably, was about to cut us off to make a left turn, she pointed at the driver with an icy stare and bellowed, “NO!” The car stopped on a dime. Then she smiled at us and waved us through.

In a city where car drivers routinely treat bike commuters like mosquitos, she’s an absolute gem.
