Brooklyn Cyclist
Two little kids shot in leg while riding bike in separate incidents

Did anyone else read these two articles — one from a week ago, and one from just yesterday — about kids being shot in the leg by stray bullets while riding their bikes outside their homes?

Scary stuff.

Should bikers obey traffic signals?

Vanessa from For the Love of Bikes makes some nice points following up on a NY Times Op-Ed about a cyclist who has been testing out (gasp!) stopping at all red lights.

Continuing to improve bike infrastructure is going to lead to better behaved bikers! On busy roads, coasting through a red light can sometimes be your only reprieve from hearing side-view mirrors wizz by your ears.

Streetsblog gives a nice recap of a public meeting this week on the proposed addition of a two-way Flushing Avenue bike lane — part of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway initiative.

Seems the plans are hardly a done deal…

I haven’t been on the bridge at all this week, but it sounds like things have been pretty dicey since the southern path was closed for repairs.

At least on the Brooklyn Bridge, there’s clearly one lane for bikes and one for pedestrians…

Any stories you can share from the Willy B this week?

Another cyclist hit in Manhattan as well…

One question they asked that I thought was great was: Are there any parts of the CB6 bike network that are particularly dangerous? Here’s one of my responses:

“Union Street through Park Slope is pretty dicey sometimes — and it’s a route I commonly take after riding east from Carroll Gardens on the Union Street bike lane toward Prospect Park.”

What do you think?

NY Daily News reports…

Next thing you know, AAA will start offering roadside assistance cyclists! Oh wait…

Village Voice wonders if Brooklyn fixed-gear bike culture has finally gone mainstream.
